Life as a Parent

Our dear little aloe plant has gone through some major transition in the last 6 weeks.

He spent his life in my mother's kitchen, sharing a sunny windowsill with his aloe plant kin,
and communing with nature out the back window.

Imagine his horror when he found himself in the cab of a moving truck and then ended up in the big city. I made some desperate attempts to make him feel at home: moving him from window to window throughout the day, following the sun; lots of verbal encouragement; field trips to the back porch. But despite my best efforts, he was quietly determined to leave this world.

Then, he ended up on top of the stove one evening, sitting in between the burners
and directly above the pilot light of our gas stove.
Several days later, the difference was marked: he was practically green.

I'm thrilled to announce a new shoot was spotted this morning and
on the way to earning my plant mother badge back*.

*I may or may not have channeled my worry over his
well-being into watering him a little too enthusiastically.
